A check valve, also called a non-return valve, allows water to flow in one direction only and automatically blocks reverse flow. It protects pumps, filters, pressure regulators, fertilizer injectors, and the water source from backflow, back-siphonage, reverse pressure, and possible contamination. It is commonly installed after pumps, near fertigation units, near filter-regulator assemblies, or on drip irrigation mainlines.

A check valve, also called a non-return valve, is a protective valve that allows water to flow in one direction only and automatically prevents water from flowing backward. It is an important component in drip irrigation, sprinkler irrigation, pump systems, fertigation units, filtration units, and mainline water distribution systems.
In normal operation, water flows in the correct direction from the inlet to the outlet. The pressure of the moving water pushes the internal disc, poppet, flap, or spring-loaded mechanism open, allowing water to pass through the valve. When the pump stops or when reverse pressure occurs, the valve closes automatically and blocks backflow.
This is important because reverse flow can damage pumps, filters, pressure regulators, fertigation units, and upstream components. In irrigation systems using fertilizer injectors or Venturi injectors, a check valve helps prevent fertilizer solution from flowing backward into the clean water source. It also helps reduce back-siphonage, line drainage, reverse pressure movement, and possible contamination of the water supply.
A check valve is commonly installed after a pump, near a fertilizer injector, before or after a filter-regulator assembly, or on the mainline of a drip irrigation system. Its main purpose is not to control irrigation timing, but to protect the system by ensuring that water moves only in the intended direction.
