Professional Summary

Misganaw Gonbis Tsegaw is an Ethiopian hydrogeologist and applied geoscience professional with strong academic training and practical field experience in groundwater exploration, GIS mapping, remote sensing, geophysical survey, borehole drilling supervision, water-well diagnosis, water-well rehabilitation, and groundwater source development. He holds an MSc in Hydrogeology and a BSc in Applied Geology from Addis Ababa Science and Technology University, giving him a solid scientific foundation in geology, groundwater systems, aquifer investigation, and water-resource development.

Although still in the early stage of his professional career, Misganaw has already gained important hands-on responsibility in real water-supply and groundwater-development projects in Ethiopia and Somalia. His work shows the profile of a young hydrogeologist who is not limited to office theory, but who has been directly involved in field investigation, drilling supervision, mapping, monitoring, reporting, and technical coordination in challenging water-supply environments.

With MS Consultancy PLC, he served as Site Supervisor and Hydrogeologist for groundwater development assignments in Puntland, Somalia. His responsibilities included hydrogeological mapping of underground water using remote sensing and GIS, geophysical survey support, and supervision of water-well drilling activities to ensure that drilling works were performed according to technical specifications. This experience is especially valuable because it combines hydrogeological interpretation, spatial analysis, field supervision, and quality control in an arid and water-stressed regional context.

He also worked on the Borena Zone Ground Water Source Development Project in Ethiopia, contributing to groundwater source development in one of the country’s important drought-affected and water-security-sensitive areas. This type of work requires practical understanding of groundwater occurrence, field conditions, drilling operations, and the importance of reliable water supply for communities, livestock, and local resilience.

From 2023 to early 2025, Misganaw worked on engineering services for sustainable, conflict-sensitive, climate-resilient, integrated water supply and sanitation services for refugees, internally displaced persons, and host communities in the East Africa R-WASH Programme, particularly in the Somali Region water sector. In this assignment, he supervised water-well drilling in the Shedder and Awbere areas and supervised the rehabilitation of six water wells in Shedder and Awbere woredas. This experience gives his profile strong humanitarian and development relevance, because the work directly supports vulnerable communities, displaced populations, and climate-resilient water access.

He also served as Hydrogeologist for deep water-well drilling supervision in the Mojo well field area for the Adama Water Supply and Sewerage Service Enterprise. His work included supervising hydrogeological aspects of deep-well drilling and ensuring that drilling activities were completed according to specification. In addition, he worked as Site Geologist and Hydrogeologist with SanAquifer Water Well Drilling for the Hawassa Water Supply and Sewerage Authority, where he collected available data, monitored and evaluated borehole drilling activities, supervised field works, and prepared regular weekly and monthly progress reports.

Misganaw has also contributed as a trainer with the Ethiopian Water Technology Institute in water-well diagnosis, rehabilitation, and geophysical investigation. This training experience shows that he is not only practicing hydrogeology, but also beginning to share technical knowledge with others. He also participated in advanced geoscientific techniques training under cooperation between the Czech Geological Survey and the Ethiopian Geological Survey, strengthening his exposure to modern geoscientific methods and international technical cooperation.

His technical strengths include groundwater investigation, borehole supervision, geological logging, drilling monitoring, geophysical investigation, GIS mapping, remote-sensing interpretation, spatial analysis, technical reporting, drilling quality control, and applied hydrogeological fieldwork. His work supports sustainable groundwater development, community water supply, environmental decision-making, and climate-resilient water infrastructure.

Misganaw represents the growing generation of young Ethiopian hydrogeologists who combine academic preparation with real field responsibility. His experience in Ethiopia and Somalia shows courage, adaptability, practical discipline, and commitment to solving water-supply challenges in difficult environments. With continued exposure to groundwater modelling, borehole design, advanced geophysics, GIS, remote sensing, and regional water-supply projects, he has strong potential to become a leading groundwater-resource specialist contributing to Ethiopia, Somalia, and the wider East African region.
